I was playing Roblox with my child today, and we both recently activated the voice chat feature for our avatars. We've played different games together like Adopt Me and the tower defense game for a while but she just told me about the voice talking today and wanted it for friends. We put in our info and soon could hear others in the game. It was great for a while, until someone started screaming the N-word over the game. I didn't know how to make it stop, so I left the game with my daughter. We joined a different game, but similarly enough, a user began spamming the chat feature with messages about Nazis that had a letter or two changed. It was sickening and we had to stop once again.

That was enough Roblox for the night, I decided. My daughter logged off, but I decided to investigate whether or not Roblox was still safe. After a few Google searches, I was disgusted to find that there are websites dedicated to making games and sharing games to upload that have completely inappropriate, 18+ content on that that is incredibly graphic. I even tested it to see if it worked and was shocked to see that it did. How can Roblox allow this and leave these games up??? How many kids are going to these and being exposed to this??? Is Roblox notifying their parents' emails about the games they are playing???

I decided tonight that until Roblox addresses this and releases a statement, my daughter will be playing other games. This site is NOT safe for kids or even regular people who don't want to see that kind of content.

Fix it!

Don’t you have to be above 13 and have to upload identification to be able to use voice chat?
Also, roblox being as big of a game as it is, there will be people trying to bypass the chat filter, and it’s not easy to make a filter that prevents bypasses without it being super strict.
Not quite sure what games you’re talking about but roblox leaves them up because they simply don’t know of them, there are quite literally billions of games, that’s what the report system is for.
Roblox isn’t your nanny, you have to regulate what your children do online, there are settings to only allow chat from friends, there are also settings that control what your child is allowed to play, and if your child is under 13 they shouldn’t even be able to have voice chat anyway, not to mention that almost every other game that has voice chat doesn’t ask for identification, so you should’ve knew EXACTLY what you were doing when setting that up and being upset over that is on your own neglect as a parent.
If you wan’t specificities on what you want your child to see or not to see, then actually SET them instead of expecting a billion dollar company to take care of them for you.

voice chat is for 13 plus so remove it from her settings.

now about the condo games those "bad apples" they're never in the front game page. u can pretty much never find out these games unless u either join a friend, see it in the social media and thats it. roblox deletes them after some time so its not big of a problem. once again they never get on the front page meaning its not that bad. and voice chat i mean what did you except?

Thankyou for saying this, it really p*sses me off when people adjust it to suit them and then whine when it doesn't go their way

But i'm pretty sure that you can play games without voice chat.

I don't know where you see my neglect as a parent when I'm playing this game with my child and actively monitoring what they're playing, as I'm with them to see all of this. You're being far too aggressive toward me as a parent doing my job and coming here to see if this is a problem anyone else has experienced.

That said, these excuses of "there are billions of games, they can't control it" are ridiculous. I've never seen anything like this on any other game I've played with my daughter, from Nintendo Switch to Animal Jam. The fact that kids (or adults potentially grooming minors) can make adult content on the platform with zero quality assurance from Roblox before it's uploaded is deeply disturbing, and I can only imagine what happens when CHILDREN can access voice chat and tell anyone their names, addresses, and social media handles to say whatever they want elsewhere.

I am lucky to have the time and schedule to where I can monitor my kids, but that's not the same for many parents and it's very unfair of you to blame them for bad moderation by a massive corporation worth billions of dollars. Shame on the bootlickers enabling this and writing it off. Little children, especially those who belong to groups that are discriminated against, are seeing content that belittles them such as slurs, and it pains me that this is happening behind closed doors with many, MANY parents unaware that this game could enable that. They don't tell you on their front page that there's a chance that your child may see racial slurs and curse words occasionally. If that's the standard, it should be on the front page in BRIGHT LETTERS. Otherwise -- FIX IT!

Finally, a company worth a billion dollars surely has the resources and insights to fix it. Otherwise, maybe a new billion dollar company with a bit more respect toward parents and their children will come along and offer a safer alternative. Let's hope so.

Thank you! We turned it off, but it's still ridiculous that they've allowed this feature for EVERYONE under 13 when there's nothing moderating it and people saying absolutely whatever they want. This should have at least been kept to 16 and up, not middle schoolers. I appreciate you giving me more information about the so called "condo" games. Glad Roblox is doing enough on that front.

The thing is, children DON’T have access to voice chat normally, they have to upload identification (which I think is a bigger problem than anything related to voice chat anyway) and they have to agree to use it responsibly, if your child is under 13, they shouldn’t have access to it period.
I do believe the age you should be able to use it should be higher, since anyone can say anything to anyone in the moment with no immediate filtering, but unlike most other settings the steps to getting voice chat are very deliberate, like I said most other games would ask for age and that’s it.
I don’t see how Nintendo or other all ages games are exempt from this, if a child were to lie about their age, they could see and buy adult-only games, you definitely can bypass filters on other games as well, and games that feature user-created content (a lot of nintendo titles do this) are prone because they can’t and won’t moderate items as they are put up (because its theoretically impossible), they have report systems for a reason. I really do fail to see how this is any different from roblox. In fact I think the only user-generated content that doesn’t have to go through approval are the games. Every shirt, audio, decal, hat, and model are reviewed before they can be put up (even if poorly so).
Roblox has many problems but this isn’t one of them

Actually the thing about that is kids under 13 can't get voice chat. They don't have an id and fake ids don't work anymore. So yeah nope it's only if you ACTUALLY verify it. If u use ur id ur automatically 18 or whatever your age is on Roblox. You can change the id card im pretty sure or remove it? I haven't ever put mine in there so just try to cancel it.

by the way moderating all people is hard itself. Roblox has like millions of players playing in each month and it would take so long. They have bots for this so it's not really their business. Bots handle moderation and everything (even support tickets). Real moderators just most likely work on adding some new features/updates or making a game as a sponsor.
So its really not that easy for a billion dollar company

You bend the rules by letting your kid use voice chat, you pay the price. As a parent, it's YOUR responsibility to read the Rules and Terms and Conditions no matter how long or boring they are. And as for all these things behind closed doors, there are parent guides websites like Common Sense Media and plenty of videos on youtube about the good and bad of Roblox. Yes, Roblox moderation is crap, but it's common knowledge. When I was 8, my parents did research into the site and since then the worst thing that's happened is that I got suspended for saying 'shut up'. The next time you find a new game, spend an hour or so looking into it, and you might not experience it again. I am sorry this has happened to you, but hopefully, this helps you understand what steps you should take in the future. If you disagree, feel free to say. Im not going to bite your head off for your opinion. We all have one.

Name at least one platform that is completely safe for children. We have to accept the fact that we can't protect our children from everything we don't want to show them. You have no idea how much children can tell you about what they saw in kindergarten or at school, on the street, or even in transport. Once my sister participated in the program https://fosterplus.org/about/foster-plus-agencies. Her family got a very lively girl who asked questions about everything she saw and heard around. Maybe it'll be a big revelation for someone, but talking to a child can give her an understanding of the reasons for the prohibition of certain things. Moderation on gaming platforms will always be improved. I don't see the possibility of reaching any ideal. But be prepared to have some serious conversations about why your kids shouldn't make a conscious choice to use inappropriate content.

I love the “what did you expect” comments. Hmmm, maybe it’s not that crazy to expect human beings to be decent and not spam harmful language in a game that is geared toward children/everyone?? Maybe it’s not crazy to expect that people can be compassionate and caring and treat others with respect?? I love that people tend to throw this back at decent people wishing others would be decent too. We accept and expect too much disgusting and rude behavior from people like it’s normal. It should not be normal! People’s behavior and attitudes toward one another have gone to $h!t and it’s really sad. It’s one thing if you’re an adult playing in an adult only forum. But if you’re playing a game set up for everyone, maybe care about your fellow neighbor and be freaking decent. 🤷🏻‍♀️

People do, yes. But the fact that we just swallow it and accept it like it’s normal… that’s sad. But the fact that it gets thrown at people like they’re the ones who are wrong. How dare someone be irritated by people who are doing their best to offend and irritate everyone 🙄.
